Travel Nurses -- How to Control Morning Sickness?
By Ugur Akinci
If you are a female travel nurse and an expecting mother, you may experience "morning sickness" in and around the ER or your trauma unit. The smell of feces, urine and other bodily fluids can easily trigger a vomiting reaction within the first thirteen weeks of pregnancy.
Also called "Hyperemesis," the morning sickness can seriously handicap an RN and prevent her from functioning in a hospital environment.
In the worst cases, hyperemesis leads to dehydration, ketosis, weight loss and electrolyte imbalance in the blood.
Here are some recommendations from the nurses who have been in the same boat for much of their first ten-weeks of pregnancy.
Some nurses said Zofran worked for them but you need a doctor's prescription and it is not a cheap pill either.
Chewing gum might help by masking the offending odors in the vicinity.
You can also try wearing a face mask treated with some peppermint of other fragrant oils. If you explain to your friends and patients the predicament you are in, they usually understand why you are wearing a face mask.
Variation on the same theme: Try carrying orange and lemon peel in your pocket and smell them when you feel like throwing up. Their fragrance might control the vomiting reflex. Fresh mint leaves might work the same way.
Request the custodial staff to mop the bathrooms frequently and clean up all offending odor sources. Also, know where all the bathrooms are on your floor or unit.
Carry a bottle of Emetrol with you as a precaution. Some people also said ginger helped in those difficult moments. Try for your self and see if it works for you.
One nurse has recommended taking half of a Unison tablet together with vitamin B-6 and do it once in every six hours. She claimed it helped preserve her strength throughout the day and helped control vomiting.
And lastly -- just in case, carry an emesis bag with you when you work. You never know. If all fails and you need it, you won't regret having it.
